Why Winstep Xtreme?

Winstep Xtreme combines advanced docks, sub-docks, Grid Stacks, shelves, drawers, menus, widgets and task management in one powerful, fully customizable workspace for Windows.

Containers define how things are displayed - you decide what they show.

Launch Everything Faster

Access applications, folders, documents, URLs and internal commands instantly with docks, sub-docks, menus and Grid Stacks.

Organize Without Desktop Clutter

Shelves, tabs and drawers let you keep projects, downloads, documents and shortcuts neatly organized while keeping the desktop itself clean.

Take Control of Windows

Improve task management, launching, menus, workspace behavior and screen space handling far beyond the stock Windows interface.

Monitor Your System Live

CPU, RAM, Net, Disk Meter, Battery, Clock, Weather and more are always available as dock modules or larger desktop widgets.

Make Windows yours

Themes, effects, icon customization, multi-monitor support and per monitor High DPI awareness let you shape the desktop around the way you work.

A Complete, Integrated Desktop Environment

Winstep Xtreme is built from two core components that work seamlessly together:

WorkShelf — provides docks, sub-docks, Grid Stacks, shelves, drawers and desktop modules for launching, organizing and monitoring your system (same core functionality as Nexus Ultimate, with the addition of desktop modules and the skinnable menus provided by NextSTART).

NextSTART — provides menus, hotspots, task management and optional Windows taskbar replacement.

Together, these components share the same themes, settings and behavior, working as a single integrated desktop environment.

See It in Action

From a clean docked layout to full desktop organization and live widgets, Winstep Xtreme lets you build the exact workspace you want.

Docks Done Right

At the core of Winstep Xtreme is a powerful dock system designed for fast, intuitive access to your most frequently used applications.

Create multiple docks anywhere on screen and group related items with sub-docks for quick, structured access. Docks can auto-hide when not in use, remain out of the way, and come to life with smooth animations and visual effects.

Shelves, Drawers and Grid Stacks

Shelves, drawers and Grid Stacks are not limited to launching applications - they can display different types of content depending on configuration.

A tab in a shelf, a drawer or a Grid Stack can act like a dock or dynamically show folders, Desktop, Documents, Control Panel items, the system tray, running tasks and more.

Menus, Taskbar and Workspace Control

Winstep Xtreme includes a powerful menu system together with flexible task management and optional taskbar replacement.

Menus are ideal for accessing infrequently used files and system commands, and can be created and customized through simple drag & drop, right-click context menus or the built-in Menu Editor. Task management features help you efficiently organize and manipulate running tasks and windows.

Desktop Modules and Widgets

CPU, RAM, Net, Disk Meter, Weather, Clock, Calendar, Battery, Email Checker, Moon Phases and more give you live system and information widgets at a glance.

Modules in Winstep Xtreme can appear both as icons inside docks, shelves and drawers, and also as larger skinnable desktop widgets.

Winstep Start Menu Organizer Pro

The Winstep Start Menu Organizer lets you clean up and reorganize the Programs folder structure used by the All Programs sub-menu in NextSTART.

While modern versions of Windows display apps alphabetically, NextSTART uses the original folder-based structure, allowing you to organize applications into meaningful categories for faster access.
Winstep Xtreme is built around a flexible system of containers and content, allowing you to launch applications, organize information and interact directly with your desktop in ways that go far beyond traditional docks.

Features In Depth

Full Integration

Winstep Xtreme is designed as a fully integrated desktop environment, not a collection of separate tools.

Docks, shelves, menus and modules work together seamlessly and share the same themes, settings and behavior. For example, changing a theme in one component automatically updates the appearance of the others.

Components can also interact directly: a WorkShelf dock or Grid Stack can be invoked from the NextSTART taskbar or even from within a menu, allowing different parts of the system to work together as a single cohesive environment.

Modular Approach

You decide what to use and what not. If you prefer the standard Windows taskbar, you can disable NextSTART’s task management while continuing to use its powerful user-defined menus, hotspots and flexible program launching features.

If you have no need for a dock or a tabbed Shelf, you can disable them as well. The same applies to desktop modules — keep only those that are useful to you and close the others.

Docks and sub-docks

Docks provide fast, direct access to your most frequently used applications, documents and commands, acting as the primary launch point for your workspace.

Itens in a dock can also open a sub-dock, allowing you to group related items and create hierarchical structures that expand on demand.

Items can be added easily via drag & drop from Explorer, the Desktop, NextSTART menus or other sources, and behave as launchable objects that can also accept files dropped onto them — for example, dropping a document onto an application icon will open it with that application.

Sub-docks expand from their parent item and can contain applications, folders, documents, Grid Stacks, Launch Pads or other objects. Sub-docks can also contain other sub-docks, with no limit to how deeply they can be nested, making it possible to build structured hierarchies while keeping the main dock clean and focused.

This allows docks to function both as fast launchers and as entry points into deeper levels of organization.

Shelves

Shelves are much more than simple tabbed docks; they are tabbed containers where each tab represents a specific type of content or behavior, allowing you to organize and access different types of data in a structured way.

There are different types of tabs. A tab can act as a regular container for applications, documents, folders and shortcuts, or it can dynamically display the contents of a system location such as the Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Control Panel or any folder on your hard drive.

Some tab types provide live views into system data, such as running tasks, recent documents or the contents of the Recycle Bin. Folder-based tab types, such as Desktop, Documents, Downloads and Show Folder, act as direct windows into the underlying folders.

When interacting with folder-based tabs, you are working directly with the actual files — adding, removing, renaming or deleting items behaves exactly as it would in Windows. Items can also be dragged from these tabs to other folders, applications or even the Windows Desktop.

Items can be added to regular tabs via drag & drop from Explorer, the Desktop, NextSTART menus or other sources, and can be moved between tabs simply by dragging them from one tab to another.

This flexibility allows shelves to function both as powerful launchers and as direct interfaces to your system and file structure.
You can create as many Shelves as you want with the built-in Dock and Shelves Manager, dock them to the screen edge of any monitor, or even leave them floating on your desktop. You can even add sub-docks and Grid Stacks to Shelves:

Drawers

Drawers are single-tab containers that expand across the screen when opened, combining the fast access of docks with the flexibility and content types of shelves.

A drawer is essentially a single-tab shelf — a hybrid between docks and shelves that combines the fast access of docks with the flexibility and content types of shelves.

Unlike shelves, drawers automatically expand to display all their content when clicked, provided it fits within the available screen space. Multiple drawers can also be open at the same time and left open, whereas shelves only display one active tab at a time.

Unlike docks, drawers can display text labels next to icons, making it possible to identify items without hovering. Labels below the icons are still optional, and drawers can be configured so that labels appear outside the drawer only when mousing over an icon.

Drawers are not limited to simple shortcuts. Like shelves, they can display special content such as the Windows Desktop, Control Panel, Recent Documents or the contents of any folder, acting as live views into those locations.

When a drawer contains more items than can fit on screen, it can be scrolled to access additional content.

When hidden, drawers collapse into a small tab rather than disappearing completely into the screen edge. This makes them easier to access without relying on screen edge activation, and they can reserve screen space so their tabs are never overlapped by maximized windows.

Grid Stacks

Grid Stacks provide instant visual access to the contents of folders and system locations directly from a dock, shelf or drawer, expanding into a grid layout when clicked that lets you browse and manage items directly.

You can browse, open and manage items directly, and drag & drop files into and out of Grid Stacks just as you would when working with normal folders.

Grid Stacks are not limited to physical folders. Using the same technology as shelves, they can also display virtual locations such as the Windows Desktop, Control Panel, Recent Documents, Applications and more.

Everything that can be displayed in a shelf can also be displayed in a Grid Stack, making them a flexible way to access both files and system data.

Folder-based Grid Stacks act as live views into the underlying folders. Files can be added, removed, renamed or moved directly within the grid, with all changes reflected immediately in the actual folder.

Folders within a Grid Stack can also be opened as additional Grid Stacks instead of Explorer windows, allowing you to navigate your folder structure entirely through Grid Stacks.

Grid Stacks normally close automatically when you click elsewhere, but they can be detached and left open by dragging their tab header away from the parent icon. This allows you to keep multiple Grid Stacks open at once, for example to transfer files between them.

Grid Stacks can also be opened from NextSTART menus, hotspots and the taskbar, allowing seamless interaction between different components of the system.

Launch Pads

Launch Pads allow you to launch multiple applications, documents, URLs or internal commands with a single click, making it possible to start entire workflows instantly.

A Launch Pad is similar in form to a Grid Stack, but instead of displaying the contents of folders it contains a set of shortcuts that are all executed together. Unlike Grid Stacks, Launch Pads are limited to shortcut-based content and do not display dynamic or folder-based tab types.

Launch Pads can be added to docks, shelves, drawers or Grid Stacks and expand automatically as you drag items into them, making them quick and intuitive to set up.

Clicking a Launch Pad launches all its items at once, allowing you to open a complete working environment — for example development tools, documents and reference material — in a single action.

By default, items launched from a Launch Pad follow the global setting that prevents multiple instances of the same application. To force a new instance, you can launch the Launch Pad using the middle mouse button instead of the left button.

If any of the items in a Launch Pad requires elevation, enabling the “Run as Administrator” option for that item ensures that all required applications are launched correctly and that User Account Control prompts are handled properly during multi-application launches.

Modules / Widgets

Winstep Xtreme includes a wide range of modules (widgets) that provide real-time information and system monitoring directly within your workspace.

Available modules include a talking digital/analog clock with internet time synchronization, a battery monitor, a calendar with built-in alarm scheduling, a recycler, an email checker with SSL and multi-account support, an animated moon calendar, a weather module, disk meter, CPU, Net and RAM meters — and even Wanda, a “fortune cookie” animated fish.
Modules are highly customizable and often support multiple display styles. For example, the clock can be shown in analog or digital form, system meters such as CPU, RAM and Net can display information as histograms or gauges, and the weather module offers different visual themes ranging from photo-realistic to cartoon-style icons.

Modules in Winstep Xtreme can also be used in two distinct ways: as compact elements within docks, shelves and drawers, or as larger, fully skinnable desktop widgets that provide more detailed information. Desktop modules can also be captured into the NextSTART taskbar in iconic form, allowing you to integrate system monitoring directly into the taskbar.

Click here for a full description of Winstep’s modules and what they do.

Powerful Menu System

The menu system can build menus dynamically by displaying the contents of folders on your hard drive, or be fully customized.

Menus can be created and modified through drag & drop, right-click context menus or manual editing via the built-in Menu Editor, giving you complete control over their structure and contents.

When browsing folders with menus, document thumbnails can appear alongside entries, allowing you to visually identify files and images before opening them, making navigation faster and more intuitive.

Hotspot Management

Hotspots let you open menus and execute commands by moving the mouse to specific screen edges, corners or defined areas.

Hotspots can be invisible or visible as desktop buttons, and can also be attached to specific applications, allowing actions to be triggered automatically depending on context.
Hotspot actions are not limited to displaying menus. You can also use them to launch programs, open web sites on your browser, and even execute one of the 80+ useful internal commands and Windows functions.

NextSTART Taskbar

The NextSTART taskbar provides a powerful and fully customizable replacement for the standard Windows taskbar.

It can be docked to any screen edge or used as a floating bar, and is divided into multiple sections including the Start button, Quick Launch, running tasks, optional WorkShelf modules and the system tray.

Each section can be repositioned and customized independently, allowing you to arrange the taskbar to suit your workflow — for example placing the Start button at the end or rearranging task and launcher areas.

Running tasks can be displayed as icons only or as buttons with icons and text, and the taskbar itself can auto-hide when not in use.

The Quick Launch section supports both traditional shortcuts and special hotspot items, allowing you to launch applications, open menus, execute internal commands, open WorkShelf docks and Grid Stacks, or activate Launch Pads directly from the taskbar.

The Start button itself is also a hotspot: by default it opens the main NextSTART menu, but it can be associated with any action, such as opening the Windows Start Menu, launching a WorkShelf "All Programs" Grid Stack or executing internal commands.

This flexibility allows the taskbar to function not just as a task switcher, but as a central control hub for your desktop.

Task Management

Running applications and the system tray are not confined to a single taskbar. In Winstep Xtreme, they can be placed anywhere — in the NextSTART taskbar, in docks, in shelves, in drawers or even hidden inside Grid Stacks — allowing you to organize your workspace exactly the way you want.

Tray Icon Customization

Note

In Windows 11 23H2 Microsoft started using XAML Islands for the system tray, which broke compatibility with Win32 applications that retrieve tray icon data. Although access to the system tray is still possible from docks and other components, tray icon customization is no longer available in recent versions of Windows 11.

System tray icons are normally small (16x16) and can appear blurry when scaled. Winstep Xtreme allows you to replace them with high-resolution alternatives (on supported Windows versions), with a built-in set of enhanced tray icons included.

Powerful Object Manipulation

Winstep Xtreme provides powerful tools to create, transform and reorganize objects across the entire system.

Docks, shelves, drawers, sub-docks, Grid Stacks and Launch Pads can be converted into one another, allowing you to adapt your workspace as your needs change. For example, docks can be turned into sub-docks, shelf tabs can be turned into docks, and folder shortcuts can be converted into Grid Stacks — and back again.

Sub-docks can even be temporarily converted into Grid Stacks to take advantage of features such as multi-selection and advanced item manipulation, then converted back once the changes are complete.

Entire objects — including everything nested inside them — can be duplicated, moved or restructured with ease, making it possible to reorganize even complex setups quickly and efficiently.

Powerful Object-based Drag & Drop

Winstep Xtreme’s object-based interface makes drag & drop a fast and intuitive way to manage applications, files, printers and other objects.

Objects can be moved, copied or rearranged simply by dragging them from one location to another, both inside and outside of docks, shelves, drawers, Grid Stacks and other Winstep components.

Unlike many other dock applications, drag & drop in Winstep Xtreme works in both directions. You can drag files from Explorer into Winstep objects or drag items from Winstep objects into Explorer folders or the Desktop, where they behave exactly as expected — creating or moving real files and shortcuts instead of removing them from their original location.

Entire objects — including docks, sub-docks and Grid Stacks — can also be dragged, copied or moved, along with everything nested inside them. This makes it possible to reorganize even complex setups quickly and efficiently.

Drag & drop can also be used to perform actions directly. Drop a document onto an application object and it will automatically open with that application, just as you would expect in Windows.

You can even change the image used by a shortcut in a dock, shelf or other object simply by dragging your favorite .ICO, .PNG or .TIF file onto it.

This consistent, object-based approach makes even complex workspace changes fast, natural and easy to perform.

Search Filter

Search is built directly into shelves, drawers and Grid Stacks, allowing you to instantly filter their contents as you type.
As you type, items that do not match the search are filtered out in real time, making it easy to quickly locate applications, documents or other objects without leaving the current view.

This is especially useful with larger collections such as the All Programs tab type — a flexible alternative to the Windows Start Menu — and when working with folder-based tabs, allowing you to instantly narrow down applications, documents or files without the clutter of external or web-based results.

Search operates on the contents already displayed, providing fast and responsive results without interrupting your workflow or introducing external results such as web searches.

This makes search a natural extension of your workspace, helping you find what you need quickly while staying focused on the task at hand.

Virtual File System Integration

Winstep Xtreme integrates seamlessly with Windows virtual file system objects, allowing you to access and interact with system locations that are not part of the regular file system.

These include areas such as the Control Panel, This PC, Network, Printers, the Recycle Bin and other special Windows objects.
Virtual file system objects can be displayed in menus, docks, shelves, drawers and Grid Stacks just like normal folders, giving you direct access to system functionality without opening separate windows.

This allows you to browse, organize and interact with both files and system components in a consistent, unified workspace without leaving your current view.

Full Windows UWP (Universal) App support

Winstep applications are unique in their category because they're able to handle UWP apps in Windows like normal Win32 applications.

UWP apps can be added to docks, shelves, drawers and Grid Stacks just like any other application, allowing them to be launched, organized and managed consistently across your workspace.

Winstep Xtreme also includes a dedicated Apps tab and menu type that lists all installed UWP applications, making it easy to browse and access them in a single, organized view.

Unlike most other dock applications, UWP app shortcuts in Winstep Xtreme fully support drag & drop. You can drop documents directly onto a UWP app object and have the application open that document, just as you would expect with traditional desktop applications.

This seamless integration allows modern Windows apps to behave like native desktop applications, providing a consistent and predictable user experience across all application types.

Internal Commands

Winstep Xtreme includes a large number of built-in internal commands that can be assigned to objects, menus, hotspots, taskbar items and other components throughout the system.

These commands allow you to trigger system actions instantly without relying on external scripts or shortcuts. Available functions include operations such as showing the Windows Start Menu, emptying the Recycle Bin, powering off the monitor, controlling media playback, looking up an IP address and much more.

Because internal commands behave like normal objects, they can be used anywhere in the Winstep environment and combined with docks, shelves, menus, hotspots and Launch Pads to create powerful custom workflows.

Click here for a full list of Winstep's internal commands and what they do.

Alarm Manager and Task Scheduler

The built-in Alarm Manager is far more than a simple reminder tool — it is a powerful and flexible task scheduler that can automate actions and notifications based on your own schedule.

You can create one-time, daily, weekly, monthly or yearly alarms with highly customizable scheduling options. Alarms can be used to display reminders, launch applications or execute internal commands, making it easy to automate both simple and complex tasks.

The Alarm Manager provides full control over your alarms, allowing you to create, edit, duplicate, disable or filter them, as well as temporarily suspend all active alarms when needed.

Alarm notifications are highly customizable. You can play individual audio files or full playlists, with support for MP3, WMA, WAV and MID formats. Playlists can be created and managed directly within the Alarm Manager and are shared with the Media Player internal command.

For wake-up scenarios, alarms can gradually increase volume and screen brightness over time, creating a smooth and comfortable experience. Likewise, the built-in Sleep Timer allows you to fall asleep to music, automatically reducing volume and brightness until playback stops.

Alarm reminders are displayed using stylish LCD panels that can be customized with different skins, overlays, colors and visual effects, including optional animations. Controls fade in smoothly when needed, allowing you to pause, skip tracks or adjust settings directly from the reminder window.

Together, these features make the Alarm Manager a powerful automation tool that integrates seamlessly with the rest of the Winstep environment.

Built-in Media Player

Winstep Xtreme includes a lightweight built-in media player that integrates seamlessly with the rest of the system.

It supports playlists and common audio formats, and can be controlled directly from alarm reminders, internal commands and other Winstep components.

The media player can be used independently or as part of automated workflows, such as wake-up alarms and sleep timers, providing a smooth and integrated audio experience.

Live Icon Reflections

Winstep Xtreme can display realistic live reflections beneath dock icons, adding depth and a polished, modern look to your desktop.

Reflections dynamically mirror each icon and update in real time, creating a visually rich effect that remains consistent as icons change.

Winstep applications are unique in offering true live icon reflections — not static images or pre-rendered effects, but reflections that update dynamically in real time.

This feature is fully configurable and can be enabled or disabled at any time, allowing you to balance visual style and performance according to your preferences.

Special Effects

Winstep Xtreme features a powerful and highly customizable system of icon and interface effects that respond dynamically to user interaction.

Different actions — such as mouseover, selection, launch, attention requests or item deletion — can each trigger their own visual effects, providing immediate and intuitive feedback.

A wide range of effects is available, including icons zooming, bouncing, glowing, rocking, swinging, squishing, spinning or even exploding, as well as smooth shifting animations when items are inserted or rearranged.
Advanced “fluid” effects make docks and icons behave like liquid surfaces, creating a unique and dynamic feel that goes far beyond traditional desktop interfaces.

Animations are also applied to menus and other interface elements, and can be complemented by optional sound effects for specific events.

All effects are fully configurable, allowing you to fine-tune or disable them to match your preferred balance between visual style and performance.

Blur Behind (Windows 7 only)

Note

From Windows 8 onward, the operating system only supports blur effects on rectangular regions. As a result, the background of irregularly shaped surfaces can no longer be blurred without the help of 3rd party libraries.

Automatically blurs the background of semi-transparent objects.

Built in support for animated icons

Winstep Xtreme features built-in support for animated icons. Animated icons in Winstep applications are as easy to use as any other icons: drop the animated icon PNG strip directly into a dock or Shelf item and the icon will automatically start animating.

Full Multi-Monitor and Per-Monitor High DPI support

Winstep Xtreme fully supports multi-monitor environments, allowing you to create docks, shelves and other objects on any screen and organize your workspace across multiple displays.

The application is also fully per-monitor DPI aware, ensuring that each monitor is rendered at the correct scale independently. This means Winstep Xtreme looks sharp and consistent even when using displays with different resolutions and DPI settings.

Objects can be positioned, sized and configured individually on each monitor, giving you complete control over how your workspace is arranged across your entire desktop.

This allows you to take full advantage of modern high-resolution and mixed-DPI setups without visual inconsistencies or scaling issues.

Automatic Multi-Monitor Profiles

Winstep Xtreme automatically adapts your workspace to different monitor configurations, screen resolutions and DPI settings using built-in multi-monitor profiles.

You can have completely different layouts depending on your current setup. For example, when using a laptop on its own you might only display a single dock, but when connecting an external monitor additional docks, shelves or desktop modules can automatically appear on the second screen.

Profiles control not only which objects are enabled or disabled, but also their exact position on each monitor. This ensures your workspace always looks and behaves as intended, without objects being moved or rearranged unexpectedly when monitors are added or removed.

Profile switching requires no user intervention. As your display configuration changes, Winstep Xtreme automatically saves the state and position of all screen objects for that specific setup, and restores them when you return to it.

Multi-monitor profiles also take themes into account. The position of desktop modules is saved on a per-theme basis, ensuring that modules remain correctly aligned even when their size or layout changes between themes.

Screen Space Management

Winstep Xtreme allows docks, shelves and other components to reserve screen space when docked to screen edges, preventing maximized windows from overlapping them.

When screen space is reserved, maximized applications automatically adjust their size and position to respect these areas, ensuring that your workspace remains accessible and unobstructed.

Winstep components can also be configured to either respect or ignore reserved screen space. For example, a dock positioned on the same edge as the Windows taskbar can either sit above it (respecting reserved space) or overlap it completely, depending on your preference.

This feature works seamlessly across multiple monitors and integrates with the rest of the system, allowing you to maintain a clean and efficient layout without constantly rearranging windows.

Screen space reservation can be configured independently for each object, giving you full control over how your desktop is organized.
You can even manually reserve screen space in NextSTART to prevent maximized windows from overlapping 3rd party toolbars and widgets that to not offer support this feature.

Keyboard Navigation

Docks, menus, desktop modules and shelves can be brought to the foreground and their items launched using user-defined hotkeys, allowing fast access without relying on the mouse.

Winstep Xtreme includes a powerful Hotkey Manager that lets you view, organize and manage all defined hotkeys, making it easy to assign shortcuts to specific items, actions and components across the system.
Full keyboard support makes Winstep Xtreme ideal for Home Theater environments. Docks can be completely controlled using only the keyboard or remote controllers such as the Logitech Harmony, allowing you to navigate and launch applications from a distance with ease.

Efficient Use of Screen Space

Everything in Winstep Xtreme is designed to minimize screen usage when not in use. Off-screen menus can be invoked by bumping a screen edge or corner with your mouse pointer, docks can be hidden off-screen until needed, shelves can automatically collapse so only their tabs remain visible, desktop modules can be hidden until activated, and even floating docks can be reduced to a single control icon.

This allows you to keep your desktop completely clear while still having instant access to everything you need.

Shelves can display the contents of special system locations such as the Desktop, This PC, Control Panel and Recent Documents, as well as any folder on your hard drive. Items can be accessed and manipulated directly via drag & drop, just as you would in Windows Explorer.

This makes it possible to maintain a completely clean desktop with no icons at all, while still having full and immediate access to your files and shortcuts through the Desktop tab or other shelf types.

Tabs can also have keyboard shortcuts associated with them, allowing you to instantly bring the Shelf to the foreground and open a specific tab.

Document Thumbnails

Documents in docks, menus and shelves can be displayed as thumbnails, making it easy to visually identify files at a glance without relying on file names alone.

Complete Customization

Virtually every aspect of Winstep Xtreme can be customized, from appearance and layout to behavior and interaction, allowing you to tailor the desktop environment to your exact needs and preferences.
